This stunning 18th century stone barn conversion in Wrightington, Lancashire with a unique character needed a truly bespoke landscape design to complement this building. Stockscape supplied the paving and walling materials together with PDG Groundworks who were initially awarded the project & the result was a stunning & in-keeping design. The work consisted of three individual stone tiered patio areas encased in natural random stone walling, a large drive area in Tower tumbled sandstone setts. Front terraced courtyard area in Tower flamed sandstone paving all encased in random walling. After a site survey a set of working plans were drawn up and the old farm site had to be cleared of concrete yard slabs & buildings. All new land & top drains were installed. Concrete strip footing were excavated & random sandstone walling was constructed to form the individual patio areas. 50mm 600 x R/L & 50mm 450 x R/L Tower sandstone paving was used with Tower sandstone tumbled setts to the outer edges. All the underside of the stone paving was brushed with a pre mix primer & laid on a full polymer bedding mix. The sub base consisted of a compacted type 1 MOT hardcore with 50mm sand & cement screed. The completed laid stone was cleaned, & grouted with Instarmac, Flowpoint. The drive areas were constructed using 65mm Tower sandstone tumbled setts, all laid on a full polymer bedding mix with added limestone to strengthen the mix. The sub base consisted of a compacted type 1 MOT hardcore with 50mm sand & cement screed. The completed laid stone was cleaned & grouted with Instarmac, Flowpoint. The front courtyard areas consisted of 30mm 450 x R/L Tower sandstone flamed paving with Tower sandstone setts to the outer edge. All the paving was laid on a full polymer bedding mix. The sub base consisted of a compacted type 1 MOT hardcore with 50mm sand & cement screed. The completed laid stone was cleaned & grouted with GftK 800 Epoxy resin mortar mix.

This bespoke designed project began with the client having the scheme designed professionally by a Landscape Architect. Having chosen the materials from Stockscape, a number of contractors were put forward by Stockscape & PDG Groundworks were successful in wining this project. The scheme was created with both stock materials and materials ordered directly, which consisted of an Egerton Red sandstone path, Magma granite paving main patio area with Magma granite tumbled setts to the outer edge. There was also a second drive area constructed using 50mm Magma granite setts with Royal White granite kerbs around the planter beds. The main patio area was excavated with stone hardcore laid to form working levels, on top of this was laid 50mm of semi-dry concrete forming a working base area. All the underside of the stone paving was brushed with a pre-mix primer & laid on a full polymer bedding mix. The paving areas were jointed with GftK 850 Epoxy resin mortar mix. The second drive area materials were ordered direct from Stockscape, using 50mm tumbled setts laid on full polymer bedding mix with added limestone to strengthen the mix. The drive area was jointed with Instarmac, Flowpoint, charcoal colour.

Front Terraced area comprised of removing the existing Granite tiles. After the removal of all tiles & old bedding mortar Magma flamed granite paving was laid on a full polymer bedding mix. Magma granite tumbled setts were laid to the outer edge, all the paving was jointed using GftK 850 Epoxy resin mortar 2 pack Basalt mix. Egerton Red sandstone was fixed to the front up-stand wall & to the inside walls of the front steps. Collingwood low LED energy lighting was fitted to the inside of the steps, giving a stunning effect over the stone at night.

This modern contemporary property was just missing one thing, an outside living area. As the existing garden was considerably lower than the property this seemed the only solution for a young & modern family. The site was cleared & prepared by PDG Groundworks, levels were surveyed & setting out profiles where fitted. Strip footings were excavated & the foundation walls & the retaining walls were constructed. The inner balcony space was filled with type 1 MOT hardcore & compacted to the correct level. Before paving could commence the stainless steel base posts were fitted. A 50mm sand & cement screed was laid onto the hardcore area to form the working levels, on to this was laid 30mm Magma Granite flamed paving supplied by Stockscape . All the underside of the stone paving was brushed with a pre mix primer & laid on a full polymer bedding mix. The paving areas were jointed with GftK 850 Epoxy resin mortar mix. On completion of the paving the fitting of the glass & stainless steel balustrade took place. Collingwood stainless LED lighting was fitted with a stainless steel water feature set in one corner, all operational by remote control.

This beautiful bespoke timber Garden Studio is one of the main features of this large garden in Wrightington, Lancashire. The site was cleared & prepared by PDG Groundworks. Strip footings were excavated & the foundation walls were formed to the size of the building, also retaining walls were constructed to retain the stone hardcore for the patio area. This was due to the location of the site being considerably out of level. The timber frame building was erected & fixed to the concrete floor slab. The patio area was constructed using 30mm 450 x R/L Tower Flamed sandstone paving slabs supplied by Stockscape. All the underside of the stone paving was brushed with a pre mix primer & laid on a full polymer bedding mix. The sub base consisted of a compacted type 1 MOT hardcore with 50mm sand & cement screed. The completed laid stone was cleaned, sealed & grouted with GftK 800 epoxy resin 2 pack mix, colour Basalt.

This traditional and quaint Public House in Lancashire initiated as an architectural specification so therefore the architect had a very considered and specific idea of product choice and how it had to be fixed. Stockscape already had a good relationship with the architect so the material choice was based on good previous experience and knowledge. Stockscape supplied Tower (opus roman-finish) sandstone for the internal flooring around the bar and restaurant area and delivered to site with appropriate off-load haulage.

Stockscape liaised with the Garden designer (Liz Folia) designing a small patio area in a domestic dwelling. The Garden was South facing and attracted lots of sunlight therefore the material colour choice and design was a key factor for the client. The designer used a magma flamed granite for the main paved area but broke this up with Portington black basalt strips. This material was also used for the steps and risers. Liz Folia sent Stockscape the drawings of the scheme and Stockscape responded with material which best suited the scheme based upon several consultations. Both Magma and Portington granites were approved by the client. For the water feature, the designer supplied a rough sketch outlining what she had in mind, Stockscape came back with recommendations as to the best way to produce the feature, which in turn, was agreed with the designer and the client. Both parties were very pleased with the outcome and have since recommended both the Designer and Stockscape for other schemes.

A great scheme highlighting Stockscape’s ability to liaise effectively with both, designer and client, with attention to detail being a prime quality of Stockscape’s service and ability.

Stockscape liaised with the client to outline initial budgets and material choice. After consultation, Crystal Black granite material was sampled for approval. After approval and a price was agreed the client issued architectural drawings in CAD detailing the specifics of the scheme. Stockscape then created a cutting schedule for the bespoke material and determined what could be supplied from stock. The cutting list was then sent to the client for approval. Logistics liaised with the client to determine if there were any site restrictions and if specific off-load was needed. A deposit was taken and the material was placed on order. When the material arrived logistics delivered using the agreed method which was a specialist mounted ‘Moffit’ vehicle (a fork-lift that detaches from the wagon and off-loads pallets). The pallets were all labelled and corresponded to the cutting list that had been previously approved, thus making it simple for the contractors to fix the material using the site drawings as reference.

In addition to the Crystal black granite the client chose Porphyry cubes which were delivered from stock using the same delivery method as above. Delivery schedules were discussed with the client to ensure that site was not hampered by the storing of material but always had materials to hand so the fixing was not delayed.

Overall the scheme demonstrates a good mix of stock and bespoke material, the client was delighted with the end result and the all round service offered by Stockscape. The entire scheme from initial enquiry to completion was 12 weeks. Stockscape also offered a fantastic ‘after service’ visiting site to ensure everything exceeded customer expectations.

These projects also included stone seats, provision for garden lighting, planting and lawn construction.
